Fun as they are, the holidays – especially the decorations and the food – can be dangerous to our pets. A big culprit for causing problems – Tinsel! Shiny strands of tinsel can be fascinating to pets, especially cats and puppies, but ingesting even a little tinsel can cause a dire emergency. Because of its long strands, tinsel in the digestive tract can actually become lodged under the tongue, in the throat, stomach and throughout the intestinal tract. This can cause vomiting, bloating, lethargy and even death, and often the only treatment is surgery. While there are many Holiday hazards to our pets, tinsel is one of the most common, and most concerning, for veterinarians. Learn more about pet health hazards, in particular tinsel, in this article from Pet MD blog.

While the rain, and even some snow, has already arrived here in northern California, winter is just beginning. The Humane Society of Inland Mendocino County is in desperate need of foster homes for the dogs in their care. Most of the HSIMC facility is outdoor kennels, and it is cold at night! For the last two years, HSIMC has found fosters for all the dogs on the cold nights, but this year they are caring for over 88 dogs, and some of them are spending the night in a kennel. Do you have room in your home to host a shelter dog? You can even take one on an “overnight” visit and drop them off at the shelter for daycare if you work during the day! You can learn more about fostering a shelter dog at the HSIMC website, their Facebook page or by calling (707) 485-0123, or send them an email at info@hsimc.org. There is plenty of winter ahead – help out a shelter dog and make a huge difference in a homeless pet’s life!

The merger of Rainbow Pet and Rainbow Middletown is complete, making the Middletown Rainbow store your go-to location in southern Lake County for all things pet, including specialized products, food and supplies such as reptile and pocket-pet needs, along with everything your cat or dog could want. Both full-service grooming and self-service wash stations are in place, and just take a look at the selection of leashes and collars! Don’t forget to say Hi to the Rainbow Pet staff when you are there, too. Everything, and everyone, from Hidden Valley Lake is now at the Middletown Rainbow, America’s Country Store!
