Mendocino County’s First Large Animal Rescue Training

On June 19 through 21, over 20 First Responders, Search and Rescue members, Animal Control staff and Cal Fire representatives took part in the first Large Animal Technical Rescue Training, which took place at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds in Ukiah. The training was put on by ResQFast, a professional training company from Sonoma County who provides certified and customized Rescue, Fire, Animal or Safety trainings. The event was hosted with the help of a grant from Rotary of South Ukiah, and a group of local horse owners who saw the need for such a training in our area. A day of Awareness Training, and then 2 days of hands-on Technical Training, taught attendees everything from the basics of haltering a horse to rescuing a horse in a flipped horse trailer, “packaging” a horse onto a slide-board and moving it, using several types of slings and hoists to bring a down horse up a steep hill, or help the horse to stand. The enthusiastic group of trainees learned about the different options in equipment, with an emphasis on both the First Responders’ and the animals’ safety. They also got a chance to handle different types of rescue equipment, including from local manufacturer CDA Products, Inc. which is located in Potter Valley.

A follow-up training is being planned, as well as a training specifically for horse owners. Learn more about ResQFast at their website, or follow them on Facebook.

Watch this video for an overview of what our local fire fighters, SAR members, County Animal Control and others learned! These trained people will be a great resource for anyone with a large animal rescue situation.

New at Rainbow Ag! I.C.E. UltraLite and ManeStay horse identification systems!

I.C.E. stands for In Case of Emergency. Whether you are out horse-camping, competing in NATRAC or Endurance events, enjoying a trail ride or just want to be sure your horse has secure, easily-visible ID during a Wildfire warning or evacuation, I.C.E. ID products are the perfect solution. Clips securely to mane, saddle rings, or bridle.

WHY READILY ACCESSIBLE/VISIBLE EMERGENCY CONTACT INFO IS SO CRITICALLY IMPORTANT:
Even if your equine is tattooed, freeze branded or microchipped (all excellent forms of permanent identification), unless the person who finds your equine has the tools to read the chip, brand or tattoo, there will likely be a delay in getting your animal identified and returned to you.

Each UltraLite or ManeStay product holds all of your emergency contact information, so that you and your horse can be reunited as quickly and safely as possible. Available at both Ukiah and Lakeport Rainbow stores.
