January is national walk your pet month 20% off collars and leashes

Related imageGo take a hike! We are very lucky to have numerous places to walk and hike in Lake and Mendocino Counties and many of them are dog-friendly. January is National Walk Your Pet Month, so whether you prefer a walk along the beach or headlands of the coast, hiking through the redwoods, or sauntering through oak and grasslands along one of the beautiful lakes, be sure to bring your dog! Regular walks provide many benefits for both us, and our pets. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 57.9% of American pets are overweight or obese and even an extra two pounds on your cat (or five on dogs) is associated with greater risk for disease. Not only is walking a good activity for us, but for our pets too. Going on a walk is perfect bonding time, and an opportunity to work on manners and good behavior. Remember to bring treats, to reward your dog when she behaves well. Vary your route for more interest and to expose your pup to new and exciting situations. Carry water for both of you, even in this cool weather, and if you are walking early or late when it is dark, consider getting a lighted or reflective leash and collar.

Trivia Game!

The December question was, Fostering a shelter pet helps by …   and the answer was All of the Above! Fostering helps by giving the pet some love and attention, learning more about that pet and how they react in a home environment, and reducing the time spent in a kennel. The socialization makes the pets more ready for adoption.

The winner of the December contest is Doreen Dutcher.

This month’s question is, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, what percentage of American pets are overweight? ENTER HERE
