Coming right up! February is Pet Dental Health Month. Modern veterinary science recognizes the importance of dental health for our pets, just as it is important for us. Special events during February include free or low-cost exams at many veterinary clinics. What about our other pets? Almost all small pets have teeth (reptiles and amphibians, maybe not …) and their dental needs are very particular and also very important. Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas teeth keep growing! Every owner should be concerned with their care as dental disease is probably the most common problem seen in rabbits and some rodents. Overgrowth of the teeth into the mouth and jawbone is the biggest dental problem, and is often caused by lack of roughage in the diet. Hamster, gerbils, rats and mice are different from guinea pigs and chinchillas. While their front teeth grow continuously, their cheek teeth do not. Therefore, hay or roughage is not an important part of their diet. They can have problems with their incisors overgrowing, and some animals do need them trimmed on a regular basis if they aren’t wearing them down themselves.
