Did you know, the most famous Christmas song ever, was really written about Thanksgiving? Jingle Bells was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857. In the winter in New England in pre-automobile days, it was common to adorn horses’ harnesses with straps bearing bells as a way to avoid collisions at blind intersections, since a horse-drawn sleigh in snow makes almost no noise. In Medford, Massachusetts, where the song was supposedly written, there were popular sleigh races down a main street –  akin to drag racing now! The story told in the song’s less-well-known verses include a rank horse overturning the sleigh in a snowbank, and the main character falling onto his back in the snow and being laughed at by a rival. In the final verse, the gentleman gives the advice of picking up some girls and renting a fast horse and heading off at full speed. “Two forty” in the final verse, refers to a mile in two minutes and forty seconds at the trot, or 22.5 miles per hour. Quite racy! Jingle all the way!
