Facts from the Field: #2 Tools and Tips from Rainbow Ag
Water Quality:
The Life-Blood of a Premium Harvest
As every grape grower knows, all water is not the same. Incorrectly evaluating water composition can cost you money in lower quality yields due to inconsistent watering, increased labor costs arising from the repeated repair of clogged lines and emitters, and the unnecessary costs of replacing irrigation system equipment.
At the same time, changes are on the horizon in the grape-buying industry: New standards appear to be emerging that will encourage buyers to standardize the way they evaluate grapes, and water quality will be one of the major factors they'll assess.
Whether using pond or ground water, you need a water evaluation program that allows you to deliver superior-quality water to your crops.
Boost the bottom line by keeping your systems running cleanly and by educating yourself about the quality of your irrigation water.
Action Alert! Redefining (and Undermining) California Wine Regions
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is considering a petition to establish a "California Coast" American Viticultural Area, and it would combine 68 unique AVAs into a single 22,000-square mile region!
Severely flawed, this measure poses a real threat to independent growers and consumers. Opposition to the petition includes the California North Coast Grape Growers, Napa Valley Grape Growers Association, Wine Institute, Lodi Appellation Winery Association, Napa Valley Vintners Association and Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers, to name a few. Public comments are only being accepted until April 25th; make your voice heard. For more information, contact the Coalition for Wine Consumer Protection at (916) 446-2859, or fax a letter of opposition directly to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms at (202) 927-8602.
Did you know?
Even if irrigation water is low in iron, it can have excessive iron bacteria. Iron bacteria corrode steel posts and cause precipitation in water lines, clogging emitters and requiring emitter replacement. Keep down costs; test your water.
