The Question: What should you do to protect your equipment from theft?

Tractor with LockThe Answer: Everything you possibly can!

At season's end, it's nice feeling to pull your equipment in under cover and walk away knowing it'll be ready to go at the end of the rainy season. But, will it?

Your equipment is very valuable--and it is very easy to sell. Thieves like it. Reduced traffic in and around storage buildings in winter encourage the bad guys, so here's a few tips to keep it safe.

1) Improve exterior lighting. Vulnerable areas should be lit at night, including doors and windows. Because lights don't help if they don't work, check operation often.

2) Beef up perimeter protection. Fencing and locked gates are a great first line of defense. Use case-hardened padlocks. Don't plant shrubbery around equipment storage; it's a great place for thieves to lurk.

3) Arrange equipment to discourage theft. Back the implements into a safe area, tongues pointing inward. This makes it very difficult for someone to hitch them up and tow them away.

4) Disable equipment. Remove keys and hide them. Depending on the piece of equipment, try disconnecting fuel lines or the coil wire. Chain equipment together.

If you make it hard enough, thieves will leave and go looking for an easier target.

Count your blessings,
and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Have you checked
your coolant lately?

BECAUSE... engine coolant loses its potency over time.

BECAUSE... 40% of engine failures are really coolant-system failures.

Winterize your equipment.
A simple coolant test kit does the trick!

• Pinpoint potential problems
• Test coolant freeze-point
