Our swine resource is Susan Pierce, who owns J&S Swine Farm in Fort Bragg. Susan’s interest in swine started out as a 4-H project 28 years ago and she continues to produce, show and sell seedstock and 4-H/FFA project pigs as well as butcher pigs and weaners. She shows her swine at fairs and shows throughout California, receiving many Supreme Champions and Champion awards over the years. The most recent wins include Supreme Champion Female at Sonoma County Fair in 2003, and Breeder of the Supreme Champion Market Hog at Lake County Fair and 2003 Reserve Supreme Champion Market hog at the Ukiah Fair. Her herd consists of Durocs and Hampshires. She purchases seedstock from the Midwest and also uses artificial insemination to improve her breeding stock.

Susan has been a 4-H leader for 20 years and has served on the Junior Livestock Auction committee for 25 years, and for the last two years as vice-chairman. She serves as a member of the High School Agricultural Advisory Committee in Fort Bragg.

Annually she puts on the J&S Swine Farm Field Day, a hands-on event for clipping and showing swine in preparation for the Ukiah and Lake County Fairs. Members from both FFA and 4-H in both counties participate. It is held the 3rd Saturday in July each year.
