Jessica Crowhurst of Redwood Valley has been raising Dutch rabbits for 6 years. She is now fifteen. She got her start when a retiring 4-Her gave her a Dutch buck. She decided she wanted to raise Dutch and has specialized in them ever since with her "Dazzlin' Dutch Rabbitry". She has been averaging about 50 rabbits in her rabbitry, and for over two years, has been specifically working on improving the hindquarters on her rabbits. She has been very successful with her rabbits, frequently winning Best of Breed for Dutch. All her hard work and careful planning really paid off in 2008 when she raised a doe that is her own breeding for 4 generations. "Dazzlin' Dutch Azule" won her first 6 shows, went on to win a Best In Show and a Reserve Best In Show, and continues to win.
With the help of Rainbow Ag, Purina, and Olive Knoll Boers, Jessica was awarded the scholarship meat goat in 2006, which was her first market animal. She raised him and worked with him for three months before the Redwood Empire Fair, where he was chosen Supreme Grand Champion Market Wether.
After being teased that she had nowhere to go but down, she replied, "No, I could start my own breeding program and go for Supreme Grand with my own stock." And that is exactly what she did. She invested her earnings into good breeding stock, took on 100% of their expenses, and is now working toward winning with her own market wethers. She has won Grand Champion Doe at the NCJ Meat Goat Show the last 3 years in a row, with 3 different does. The last two years she has won with does of her own breeding. She has found that ten breeding does is a good size for her herd. In 2008 she purchased a top quality registered purebred Boer buck.
In 2007, Jessica set her sights to qualify for Small Animal Round Robin for the first time. She not only qualified in her first show, at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, but went on to win Round Robin! She then upped her goal to qualify for Round Robin at the California State Fair (even though she had never even been to State Fair before.) She did make it to State Fair that year, and qualified for junior Round Robin which is called Small Animal Master Showmanship. Competing in the California State Fair for the first time, Jessica WON junior Small Animal Master Showmanship at the 2007 California State Fair. She has set her new goal and is working toward winning Senior Small Animal Master Showmanship at the California State Fair sometime in her 4-H career. She has also begun competing in Large Animal Round Robin.
Jessica also shows cavies (guinea pigs) and her Miniature Australian Shepherd Dog quite successfully. She enjoys showmanship, studying and practicing before each show. At the 2008 Redwood Empire Fair she won Advanced Rabbit showmanship, Advanced Cavy Showmanship, Advanced Dog showmanship and Advanced Meat Goat Showmanship. She also won 4-H Small Animal Round Robin at the Sonoma County Fair, the Redwood Empire Fair and the Mendocino County Fair in 2008. At the 2008 California State Fair she moved up to the senior division, being 14 years old. (The senior division is for 14 - 19 year olds.) She won 3rd place in both rabbit and dog showmanship in her first time in the senior division at State Fair.
Jessica enjoys sharing her animals with others, and does so regularly through petting zoos. She is always willing to help others. She has taught many kids showmanship and helped them improve their skills. Additionally, Jessica is active in her church youth group, plays the flute (when she can find time), played varsity soccer and is a straight "A" student at Potter Valley High School. She is very active in 4-H, taking on leadership responsibilities and roles within the club and our community.
She sets her goals and standards high, works hard to achieve them, and encourages and inspires others to do the same.
