Five Oaks Durocs - Duroc Hogs of Distinction
4H'ers have done well at the fairs with Duroc hogs from Dr. Walt Barr's Five Oaks Durocs, in Potter Valley. Last year Walt's hogs were exhibited at the Redwood Empire, Lake and Humboldt County Fairs. Over 90% of those shown grouped Gold, with many class winners, Champions and Reserves. This is quite an accomplishment amongst tough competition.
Dr. Barr moved to Potter Valley in 1999 and began helping with a 4H market hog project in 2000. It morphed into a breeding project with a Duroc sow and then in 2002 he took it over from the retired 4H’er. Since then he has been striving to improve the quality of his Duroc lines, one litter at a time. By using artificial insemination he has gained access to the premier sires of the Duroc breed and is looking forward to a terrific crop of pigs this coming February and March.
This year's sires are Can’t Resist It, God’s Gift and Seein’ Red, along with Brother Darrel. Maternal sires are Big Brown, Freak Show, Red King, and Rojo Rhino.
Three of the A.I. sires utilized over the last four years have been honored with the premier sire designation at major shows across the U.S. Sires include:
1. $64,000.00 top selling and champion boar from the 2006 Fall Classic-“FreakShow”.
2. The pride of Howard Parrish’s new boars, “Red Carpet”. He is bred Howard’s choice as his best available female.
3. STN Complete—Stewart’s Duroc Farm’s newest boar and sire of the grand champion Gilt at the 2007 Summer Type Conference.
On a more personal note, Dr. Barr is a chiropractor with a practice in Ukiah and three days a week at the Long Valley Health Center in Laytonville. He raised X-bred hogs for meat and milked a couple of cows while still in Colorado before moving to Potter Valley. 4Hers are always welcome to stop in and check out his little hog farm of six sows and one adult boar.
